The US Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) provides many STEM opportunities for students of all ages. Whether you’re an eCYBERMISSION participant wanting to continue your work with STEM or a student who is younger or older looking for something entirely new, AEOP has opportunities for everyone. AEOP also encourages educators and volunteers to continue and add to their experience by participating in other STEM programs and competitions. STEM Enrichment Activities

Camp Invention - Developed by the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Camp Invention is a summer STEM enrichment experience for students nationwide. It features collaborative learning opportunities led and administered by local teachers. Curriculum is science-based, age appropriate and developed by the non-profit group Invent Now. It features fun, hands-on activities using problem-based learning. Each day, students rotate between four thematic modules that build upon what was learned the previous day.

GEMS - Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science [GEMS] is an Army-sponsored, summer STEM enrichment program for middle and high school students that takes place in participating Army Research Laboratories. GEMS is driven by the overarching mission: to interest young people, who might not otherwise give serious thought to becoming scientists or engineers, in STEM careers early enough in their education so that they have the time to attain the appropriate academic training. The program is based on a multi-disciplinary educational curriculum, and is focused on age and grade-appropriate hands-on activities, in areas such as science, engineering, mathematics, computational sciences, computational biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry and biology.

UNITE - UNITE is a four-to-six week, pre-collegiate summer experience for talented high school students from groups historically underrepresented and underserved in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Held at higher education institutions across the country, UNITE encourages students to pursue college majors and careers in engineering and other STEM-related fields through a program of focused hands-on rigorous academics, enrichment, and career exploration.

STEM Competitions

JSS - Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) is a free educational program for 5th through 8th grade students where students design, build and race solar powered cars using hands-on engineering skills and principles of science and math. Students develop teamwork and problem solving abilities, investigate environmental issues, and gain hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills to create the fastest, most interesting, and best crafted vehicle possible. JSS is designed to support the instruction of STEM in categories such as alternative fuels, engineering design, and aerodynamics. Students who are part of a registered Technology Student Association (TSA) chapter or who compete at an approved Army host site are eligible to compete in JSS. Teams must follow the official TSA middle school competition rules when competing in JSS.

JSHS - JSHS is designed to challenge and engage students (Grades 9-12) in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Opportunities for hands-on workshops, panel discussions, career exploration, research lab visits and networking are planned.

SEAP - The Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) matches practicing DoD scientists with talented high school students creating a direct mentor-student relationship that provides students with training that is unparalleled at most high schools. SEAP participants receive first-hand research experience and exposure to Department of Defense laboratories. SEAP fosters desire in its participants to pursue further training and careers in STEM.

HSAP - The High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP) provides rising high school juniors and seniors with an authentic science and engineering research experience alongside university researchers sponsored by the Army Research Office. Though this commuter program students will develop skills in Army critical science and engineering research areas in a university lab setting to prepare them for the next steps of their educational and professional career.

REAP - Research & Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP) is a summer STEM program that places talented high school students, from groups historically under-represented and underserved in STEM, in research apprenticeships at area colleges and universities. REAP apprentices work under the direct supervision of a mentor on a hands-on research project. REAP apprentices are exposed to the real world of research, they gain valuable mentorship, and they learn about education and career opportunities in STEM. REAP apprenticeships are 5-8 weeks in length (minimum of 200 hours) and apprentices receive a stipend.

URAP - The Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP) provides undergraduate students with an authentic science and engineering research experience alongside university researchers sponsored by the Army Research Office. Through this commuter program students will develop skills in Army critical science and engineering research areas in a university lab setting to prepare them for the next steps of their educational and professional career.

CQL - The College Qualified Leaders (CQL) program matches practicing DoD scientists with talented college students creating a direct mentor-student relationship, providing participants with training that is unparalleled at most colleges. CQL students receive firsthand research experience and exposure to DoD laboratories. CQL fosters desire in its participants to pursue further training and careers in STEM. Selected participants receive a stipend based on education and experience and may participate year-round.

RESET - Research Experiences for STEM Educators and Teachers (RESET) provides educators with summer research experience at participating Army Laboratories. The goal of this enriching program is to reinforce teachers’ content knowledge through research experience and interactions with Army and Department of Defense scientists and engineers. Selected teachers will participate in on-line learning as a cohort, with a subset of the cohort selected to conduct research on-site with a mentor Army scientist or engineer. At the completion of the program, teachers will be able to translate this knowledge and experience into enhanced science, technology, engineering and math research curricula and enriched learning for their students.

SMART - The DoD Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion. NDSEG - The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship is a highly competitive, portable fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines. NDSEG confers high honors upon its recipients, and allows them to attend whichever U.S. institution they choose. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance (this excludes dental and vision insurance).
